War Memorial
UKI WAR MEMORIAL
The Uki War Memorial was built in 1927 in memory of the servicemen who enlisted from the South Arm Area during World War 1. The Lismore firm of Roberts and Davis were responsible for it’s construction. Charlie Milsom and Len Loder were responsible for organizing public donations to finance the project. The unveiling of the memorial was carried out in 1927 by David marshall, Charlie Milsom and Mrs P. Hall.
In 1952 a plaque for the 2nd World War was provided as a gesture from World War 1 members of the Uki sub – branch, who contributed to the cost and installation twenty one years later in 1973. That year, a further plaque was added for the Korean, Malayan and Vietnam conflicts. This was unveiled at a special ceremony, by the then Governor of New South Wales, Sir Rodan Cutler.
The cycads found today growing on the Memorial grounds are descendants of those planted in 1927.
In 1989 the Sub-Branch spent $1575.75 on repair and re-tiling of the column and steps of the memorial.
Over the years the memorial and grounds were maintained by the sub – branch. In 1991 Tweed Shire Council was approached to accept responsibility for ground maintenance. In May 1992, the Sub – Branch resolved to upgrade the memorial by –
- Replacing the step tiles with granite.
- Resurfacing and repainting the structure.
- Replacing the overhead power lines and light, with a ground mounted floodlight and underground power.
The refurbishing was completed just in time for the 1993 Anzac Dawn Service. The cost of the project was approximately six thousand dollars. This cost was met by the Sub – Branch. The money had been raised mainly from the Friday night raffle held at the Mount Warning hotel in Uki .
In 1993, Tweed Shire Council agreed to accept responsibility of all future maintenance and upkeep of the Memorial and surrounding area. In July 2000 just prior to the Sub – Branch’s 80th anniversary the memorial was repainted by the council.
On the 7th of August 2005, the memorial was the centre of celebrations for the 85th anniversary of the Uki RSL Sub-Branch.
