Second Community Forum - Priority Action Voting

1.      Upgrade open space areas in the village centre:

• conversion of the old tennis shed to a performance stage

• removal of the fence from around the Historical Society

• water fountain/bubbler at village square

3. Continue the work on vegetation management to rehabilitate river and along the creeks. Includes improved land use at rear of the shops (a better experience of the river), eg platypus walk

5. Upgrading of the park opposite Sports Ground – eg seating/bollards/bins/water fountain

6. Interpretive signage for significant environmental work, aboriginal heritage and places of historical significance

8. Renovate the general store façade to meet the heritage status of the village centre

10. Convert the existing public toilet sewerage connection to composting toilets

11. Showcase Uki as an environmentally aware community – carbon neutral, no plastic bags, sustainable use of resources (rainwater/solar), awareness campaign

3. Improvement to tourist information signage. Including better signage at Pacific Hwy and Tweed Valley Way exits.

4. Investigate the scope for additional tourist opportunities:

• village tourist walk that includes enhanced access to the river

• a history/heritage walk throughout the village/horse drawn carriage rides

• bicycle hire from the Buttery

• a cycle loop that includes Uki, Kunghur, Tyalgum (Tour de Uki)

• canoeing/gondola on the river

• a Uki garden trail

• a floral mural

• a pioneer museum

• platypus walk

5. Co ordinated tourism marketing for our district, including promotion of Uki as         a weekend, eco-tourism experience

6. Identify and pursue additional bus and car parking opportunities in the village

7. Identify and pursue more shopping, eating and entertainment ideas for the local community

8. Encourage more tourist operators (eg buses etc) to consider Uki in their planning

1.      Safety improvements for the village:

·        speed calming in Main St / Norco St / Rowland Creek Rd

·        combating anti social and destructive behavior in the Hall park/Buttery precinct

·        eliminate ‘hooning’ with vehicles in the village and nearby parklands

·        lighting in Norco Street and at rear of Buttery

·        one way at lower Rowlands Ck Rd – roundabout in front of Norco St

·        upgrade Kyogle Road at eastern end of village

·        eliminate dip in main Street between bridge and general store

·        potential for village bypass in longer term

2.      Work with Council to improve access throughout the village, including

• pedestrian/cycle link Sweetnam Park to Sports Ground and Smiths Ck Rd

• achieve a totally wheelchair friendly village

3. Work with Council to achieve a cycle way that links Uki and Murwillumbah and other Tweed communities.

5. Establish the Uki Community Garden (includes a pizza oven and a green waste site)

6. Family friendly projects :

• Establish daytime playgroup/playground in the village centre (independent of the operation of Uki school after school care),

• Provide a baby change table in the public toilets

7. Create facilities for youth:

• mountain bike/BMX park

• skate park

• movies in park at rear of Buttery

• a greater range of sporting, entertainment and cultural opportunities, perhaps to include a clubhouse/meeting place

• accessible swimming hole

8. Facilitate improved community communications & dialogue:

• a prominent signboard to advertise community/school events

• recruitment of more community volunteers

• more support for the CTC

• better use of the website (ukivillage.com.au)

• establish a new resident’s information kit

• include views of the indigenous community in village planning

9. Investigate alternative community transport options, eg more public transport services, car pooling, a community bus

10. Promote Uki arts, culture and healing – link to TSC cultural development program and establishment of themed festivals and events
